Welcome, fellow vapers, to a vape-cloud showdown! In this cheeky yet informative battle of vape clouds, we'll explore the differences between mouth-to-lung (MTL) and direct-lung (DL) vaping styles. Picture this as the ultimate vaping Olympics, where each style competes for the gold in flavour, vapour production, throat hit and overall vaping satisfaction. So, grab your popcorn, sit back and read on.
MTL Vaping: savour the flavour!
First of all, MTL vaping is a ciggie-style draw, where you draw vapour to your mouth, hold, then inhale to the lungs. Good MTL vape kits will provide low vape cloud production, low-wattage vaping, good throat hit and a restricted draw that’s usually inhaled from a thinner bore drip tip or mouthpiece.
MTL vaping is like savouring a fine wine; indulging in the exquisite flavours of your e-liquid. As you draw from your vapouriser, the vapor gently glides into your mouth, allowing you to relish the delightful notes of your favourite e-juice.
How to identify an MTL vape kit
MTL vape kits are usually pod vape kits, like a Uwell Caliburn, but there are some pod mod kits, like the Vaporesso Luxe XR Max Pod Mod Kit, and even mod kits, like the Vaporesso Gen Fit Kit, created to cater for all you MTL vaping lovers. So, if you identify as an MTL vaper, look for the following features when searching for a vape kit:
- higher ohm (resistance), low-wattage disposable pods or replaceable coils
- slim bore drip tip or mouthpiece
- low to medium vape cloud production
- kits that have both MTL and DL vaping ability.

DL Vaping: embrace the cloud chaser within!
With DL vaping, you draw that beastly vapour straight to your lungs, bypassing the mouth, like breathing in through your vapouriser or sucking on a puffer. It’s not for the faint-hearted!
If MTL vaping is a gentle breeze, then DL vaping is a full-blown tropical storm of clouds! Picture yourself standing on the deck of a ship while it’s sailing past what appears to be thick fog, only to realise the ‘fog’ is coming from your mate standing next to you, vaping his Geek Vape Aegis Legend 2 L200 Vape Kit.
If you’re new to vaping and think you might be a DL vaper, please take care! DL vaping might require a bit of practice to tame the cloud-beast within.
How to identify a DL vape kit
While DL vaping used to only be achieved through large mod and tank kits, these days, you’ll find some pod kits and pod mod kits offer DL vaping too! Just look out for the following features if you’re into DL vaping like a boss:
- low resistance (sub ohm), high wattage, replaceable coils
- high-wattage devices with adjustable wattage
- medium to large vape cloud production
- lots of adjustable airflow
- wide bore drip tip or mouthpiece
- larger battery devices
- larger vape juice capacity
- kits that have both MTL and DL vaping ability.

Should beginner vapers use MTL or DL?
As a beginner, we usually recommend starting with a simple MTL vapouriser so you ease your way into vaping with a smooth and gentle vape. Since MTL draws mimic the draw of a traditional cigarette, it may make it easier for you, as a beginner, to transition from smoking to vaping so you aren’t overwhelmed with clouds before your boat gets to deep water.
If you think you might quickly become a DL vaper, we recommend choosing a vape kit that offers both MTL and DL vaping, that way you switch up your vaping style without having to buy a second device.
MTL vs DL vaping: is one safer than the other?
Ah, the safety question – it's like asking if pirates prefer parrots or peg legs! Not sure if the peg leg is a preference but we digress. The truth is, both MTL and DL vaping can be safe when done responsibly. The key lies in using quality vape devices, following proper battery safety guidelines and choosing reputable e-liquids.

Can I use MTL liquid on DL coils?
The majority of non-nicotine e-liquid that we sell (and most vape stores as well) are a 70VG/30PG (percentages of vegetable glyceryn and propylene glycol) blend which can be used on any vaping device regardless of their draw type. So, if you’re new to vaping, don’t worry about this when buying standard vape juice.
What vapers refer to as an ‘MTL liquid’ is one that has a higher PG blend, for example 50VG/50PG, making the e-liquid thinner so it's vapourised easier by lower temperatures to provide more vapour flavour.
It wouldn’t ruin your vape kit or coils if you used an MTL e-liquid with DL coils but it certainly performs better in an MTL vape kit as you might not get that full-bodied flavour or those thick vape clouds vapers love.
